“Bad research is worse than no research.” – Nic Walter
Nic Walter recently joined our first-year mapping class for a special workshop titled Improving Cartographic Design with Public Opinion. Through surveys, interviews, and data-driven research, he demonstrated how thoughtful research deepens our understanding of the relationship between design and the broader world.
In his role at The New York Times, Nic supports the development of innovative storytelling formats, business strategies, and marketing campaigns by conducting interviews, focus groups, and surveys. Prior to The Times, he led an international team of design researchers at Google, shaping products and services. His extensive portfolio also includes work with American Express, Facebook, and FedEx.
Our students at DSI, gained valuable insights into how a research lead at The Times plans, budgets, conducts, and synthesizes research to drive meaningful impact.
