Student Spotlight: Fast Track Course

Fast Track is an honors program open to first and second years that allows a small number of students the opportunity to design, prototype, and propel their idea into the real world at an accelerated rate. Once a project is selected, students work with a faculty panel on connecting with outside experts, advisors, and potential partners.

Typically, a student of fast track comes into the program with a large amount of research already conducted, and prototypes in mind. Pictured are the results of Fast Track for Fall 2019, produced by Danielle Skinn (‘20), and the joint-effort of Lorena Estrella (‘20) and Andrea Miranda Salas (‘20).

Danielle has designed decorative pillows as an invitation for consumers to close the loop on textile waste by composting or burying them when they’re ready to change up their decor. Using natural fibers, wool, cotton and wood, the pillows are completely biodegradable. She has been working on these pillows for about 10 years, searching for the right materials and means of putting them into the world that creates as little negative impact on the environment as possible while promoting conscious consumerism. Fast track has been the perfect place for her to weave together the pieces she’s gathered over the years and get personalized feedback and guidance to move the pillows forward.
