Visiting Amazonia: a Worst-Case Scenario Store

This week, we’re highlighting a recent pop-up installation by thesis advisor Sahar Ghaheri and her colleagues over at Grey Area Collective: a women-led social impact design and research studio that combines activism with art and technology.

Their installation, Amazonia: a worst-case scenario store, was inspired by the experience of your average Amazon Go store, but exhibited fictional products for New Yorkers surviving a dystopian, climate-ravaged future. In this scenario, basic needs such as food, water, power, and communication systems are on the verge of collapse. The project strives to make the scope and complexity of climate change tangible and specific, through the lens of everyday objects. It is an invitation to imagine futures that currently seem impossible, and encourage viewers to consider their role in the fight against climate change in these pivotal moments.
