About DSI

Tianyue (Caroline) Zhang and Tara Maurice (‘20) are leveraging their thesis project PRETTY/UGLY to meet the pressing needs of the moment.

PRETTY/UGLY is radically rethinking sustainability through content creation, live events, and strategic collaborations in work that communicates the interdependence of man and nature. With a sense of urgency and possibility, PRETTY/UGLY’s work makes clear: “there is no garbage in nature.” Now, they are using this time of pandemic and using their strengths as social designers to propose a provocative “zero-waste” mask system: IMaskNY.

In early April 2020, the state of NY began to require citizens to wear non-surgical masks outdoors for public safety. The duo saw this as a chance to experiment with new systems that are like nature and circular in design. #IMaskNY is a zero waste prototype that is using the need for masks and available textile waste, to educate about creative reuse and regeneration. #IMaskNY aims to the need to redesign our concept of waste in order to mobilize change.
