We are excited to announce that for a sixth year, we are pleased to offer the Paul Polak Scholarship from MFA Design for Social Innovation. This $10,000 a year scholarship will be awarded to one student in the class of 2022. In light of his recent passing, we hope that this award will be one of many ways DSI can help carry on Paul’s honorable legacy. Beyond his globally recognized accomplishments, Paul was a beloved friend, mentor, and advisor to our program, and we are confident that our students will continue to reflect on his courageous, innovative spirit as we move forward.
The world knew Paul as a revolutionary of social innovation and a natural-born designer. He worked tirelessly with thousands of farmers around the world to help design and produce low-cost, income-generating products that moved over 22 million people out of poverty. He was the founder of major social design organizations such as International Development Enterprises (IDE), Windhorse International, Spring Health, and D-Rev. Before these endeavors, he pioneered the practice of context-based research and treatment for people with mental illness as a psychiatric researcher. The Atlantic granted him recognition as one of the world’s “Brave Thinkers” alongside Barack Obama and Steve Jobs in 2009, and the Scientific American named him one of the 50 leading contributors to science. In 2004 he was named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the western states, and received the Florence Monito Del Giardino award for environmental preservation in 2008.
DSI applicants will automatically be considered for the Paul Polak Scholarship only if the application is submitted by January 15, 2020; no separate application is required. Start your application today at dsi.sva.edu/apply.
