We recently announced our partnership with the St. Louis-based Creative Reaction Lab. DSI works to partner with organizations whose core principles and goals align with our own.
We define Social Design as the creation of new social conditions — in cities, corporate cultures or communities — resulting in increased creativity, equity, social justice, greater resilience, and a healthy connection to nature.
Creative Reaction Lab’s mission is “to educate, train, and challenge Black and Latinx youth to become leaders designing healthy and racially equitable communities.” They pioneered the concept of “Equity-Centered Community Design” (ECCD) which is based on “equity, humility-building, integrating history and healing practices, addressing power dynamics, and co-creating with the community.”
Equity is the critical central pillar of all practice of social design; without focusing on equity, social designers will fail to make meaningful, effective change. More so than the concept of “equality” which purports to give all people the same of everything, equity looks at the specific circumstances of a community and works to provide that which will allow for abundance and success within their specific socio-historical context.
